Harambee Stars was held to a 1-1 draw by East African neighbors Uganda Cranes in a friendly match played at the Kasarani Sports Center on Sunday, September 8. It was the first match under Francis Kimanzi since he was appointed National team head coach in August.

The match was more of a training routine as the manager gets to know his players better ahead of the AFCON qualifiers that will start later this year. Below, we look at the main lessons that can be picked from the entertaining draw.

Slow Starts

Harambee Stars made a very slow start to the match and were lucky to be only one goal down at half time. They were being battered by the Ugandans who were consistently carving the defense open almost at free will.

Kimanzi had to make a first-half change to try gain some control and to be fair to him, the plan worked. However, the team needs to impose themselves on the opponents early on or risk chasing matches for long periods.

Right Back still an issue

The lack of a natural and competent right back in the national team has been an issue for the past few years. Samuel Olwande was deployed in the position and struggled all through the match.

Most of Uganda’s attacks came from that flank including their goal which was beautifully constructed. The position needs addressing as it is clearly the team’s main weakness.

Lawrence Juma and Kenneth Muguna partnership positive

One of the main positives from the match was the partnership of Gor Mahia duo Kenneth Muguna and Lawrence Juma. The two struggled early on but once they got into their groove, there was no stopping them.

Their understanding is very good as they play with each other every week at Gor Mahia. Kenneth Muguna got more plaudits since he scored Kenya’s equalizer but Lawrence Juma deserves credit too for his showing against an experienced Ugandan midfield.

There is something to build on there.
