Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Thursday told journalists that he will announce his deputy by the end of the week.

Sonko made the announcements while responding to journalists’ questions after leaving the EACC headquarters, where he had been grilled over irregular tenders by the county government.

Last month, the governor said in a social media post that he intends to appoint a woman to fill the position which has been vacant since January 2018 following the resignation of Polycarp Igathe.

“It is worth of note that as a politician, I believe in keeping my promises to the electorate. And earlier, I committed myself to Nairobians that my nominee for Nairobi City County’s next Deputy Governor shall be a woman,” he said.

The governor was responding to a public request made by a Nairobi resident Philip Chogoti Chepsat who expressed his interest to be appointed deputy governor of Nairobi County via a newspaper advert.

If he keeps the promise, it will be the second time the governor will be naming his deputy.

In May, the governor forwarded Miguna Miguna’s name to the Nairobi County assembly for approval as his deputy but it rejected his nomination to the vacant position.

Miguna also rejected the appointment.
