Harambee Stars striker Michael Olunga will for the first time captain the national team when Kenya takes on Uganda in an international friendly match on Sunday, September 8 at the Moi International Sports Center Kasarani

Stars captain Victor Wanyama will miss the match through injury and in the absence of David Owino and Brian Mandela who have skippered the team before, new coach Francis Kimanzi, has handed the Kashiwa Reysol man the armband heading into the match against the Cranes.

Addressing the press on Thursday morning, Kimanzi said his decision was informed by the fact that the lanky forward is one of the most experienced players in his squad at the moment. Gor Mahia assistant captain Joash Onyango will deputize Olunga.

“When you don’t have your regular captain, you have to look around among your most experienced players and Olunga stands out on that aspect. That is among the reasons we felt he is best placed to lead the team,” Kimanzi said.

Apart from Wanyama, Joseph Okumu and Bernard Ochieng will also sit out of the match. Zesco United striker Jesse Were who was recalled to the national team fold is also a doubt for the match as he is carrying a suspected hamstring problem.
