Nigeria Issues Travel Advisory for Nigerian Nationals in South Africa

The government of Nigeria on Wednesday issued a travel advisory following the ongoing Xenophobia attacks in South Africa.

Through a statement issued, the west African government cautioned Nigerians residing in South Africa from travelling to areas highly affected by the situation.

“However, due to the tension created by the attacks, the government of Nigeria wishes to advice Nigerians to avoid travelling to high risk and volatile areas until the situation is brought under control,” read a part of the statement.

The Nigerian government further affirmed that engagements were being conducted with the South African government to ensure that action was taken to curb the attacks.

Through the Nigerian spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ferdinand Nwonye, the government had applauded the efforts made by their counterparts in arresting some of the perpetrators.

Reports had indicated that the security in the country was increased after a supermarket chain in Abuja was vandalized.

Further information claimed that security around businesses owned by South Africans was intensified following retaliation attacks over Xenophobia.

In South Africa, the death toll rose to seven after the South African police discovered two burnt bodies in a store.

Nigerian singers and the Zambian football team boycotted trips to the Southern nation following the violence that has ravaged the country for the past two days.
