The Main Talking Points From Week One In The Kenya Premier League

The Kenya Premier League officially kicked off over the weekend. All 18 teams were in action in what was a goal-filled first day of the 2019/2020 season.  Below we look at the main talking points from matchday of the Kenyan Premier League.

Reality Check for Wazito FC

The transfer window was dominated by headlines from the newly promoted Wazito FC signing big players for big money. Indeed, the club signed over 15 players both young and experienced which had some pundits backing them to give Gor Mahia a run for their money in the title race.

However, despite the excitement that the transfers brought, it did not reflect on the pitch as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Nzoai Sugar at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos. More will have to be done if the team is to give Gor Mahia a scare this season.

Same old Leopards

AFC Leopards must hate playing against Kakamega Homeboyz. Ingwe has won just once in their last 7 league encounters with Homeboyz. Over the weekend, an 84th-minute winner from Homeboyz condemned Leopards to their first loss of the season judging by the display from the away side, there will be more losses to follow.

Furthermore, there are rumors that Cassa Mbungo who is the current head coach at the Den could be on his way out of the club. Different season, same old Leopard!

KCB looking impressive

KCB made some smart moves in the transfer market. After signing Zedekiah Otieno as the new head coach, the team also captured Sofapaka’s experienced duo of Steven Waruru and Dennis Odhiambo.

On the pitch, KCB was in scintillating form and saw off Sony Sugar 3-0 at their own backyard in Awendo. Beating Sony at home does not happen very often which is enough proving of just how good this KCB team is.

Gor Mahia set the marker early on

Facing Tusker FC in the first match of the season was supposed to be a real test for Gor Mahia. The champions lost two influential players in midfielder Francis Kahata and striker Jacques Tuyisenge and it was always going to be interesting seeing how they cope.

Truth be told, Gor Mahia made light work of Robert Matano’s charges and ran out 5-2 winners in the end. No team has ever won the Kenya Premier League title 4 seasons in a row but based on the showing in Kisumu, Gor Mahia could break that record this season.

They are the team to beat!
