Wazito raid Mathare United for Harambee Stars defender

Newly promoted Kenya Premier League side Wazito FC has announced that Johnstone Omurwa has rejoined the club from Mathare United, penning a long-term contract.

Omurwa first joined Wazito in January 2017 after completing his secondary school education at Butere High School. He initially played as a defensive midfielder although he has now established himself as a reliable central defender.

He then moved to Mathare in January 2018 and went on to become a key player for the Slum Boys in his two seasons there. His good performances have seen him develop into a key player for the Kenya U23 team and recently he earned a call-up to the senior national team for 2020 CHAN qualification matches against Tanzania.

Sporting director Solomon Alubala said he is excited about Omurwa’s return. He also noted that the defender has developed into a better player.

“I am happy that he agreed to return home, he is a good player and his addition makes the team stronger. He played a key role in our promotion to the Kenyan Premier League in 2017 but unfortunately, he was not part of the team in the top tier. I think he has also matured for the last two years, he is now a national team player but still young so he will definitely improve further. He will be part and parcel of the exciting project we are undertaking,” Alubala told the club website.

On his part, the player said he is ready to work hard for the good of the team.

“Wazito gave me a chance to play club football and I am happy to be back here. I have returned home and I will give my best to the team. I think I have matured more as a player now and I am looking forward to the new season,” he stated.
