Firebrand Malindi Member of Parliament Aisha Jumwa has turned guns on the Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua for campaigning for abolishment of the women rep position.
Speaking during the ‘Inua Mama, Jenga Taifa’ caucus at a function in Meru County on Friday, Jumwa openly attacked men like Alfred Mutua who want an amendment of the constitution seeking to remove Women Rep post for being a burden to the country.
The governor wants the post replaced with a reserved member of parliament position for women in a single constituency per county.
Mutua says that this would reduce the number of legislators “bloating” the government
“I want to tell men like Alfred Mutua who are claiming that women in this country are a burden. Affirmative action is an equalizer… there is need to empower women. We are not seeking seats on a silver platter. We shall resist any attempt by some few individuals who want to create posts for themselves,” ranted Jumwa.
The much-hyped Punguza Mizigo Bill 2019 led by Thirdway Alliance party leader Ekuru Aukot proposes scrapping of Women Rep seat as well as reduction of the number of MPs from 416 to 147.
Jumwa, an ODM legislator has for a while been in a dire war with the Party led by Raila Odinga for supporting his political ‘enemy’ Deputy President William Ruto’s leadership.
She ended up being kicked out of the party, however, Parties Disputes Tribunal suspended her expulsion.
