Former Bafana Bafana player murdered

A former South African footballer, Marc Batchelor has been killed while driving in the streets of Johannesburg by suspected gunmen near his home.

Batchelor a former Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs striker was gunned down while driving in his car on Monday evening, according to the South African police.

He was fatally shot when two gunmen on motorbikes opened fire on his vehicle’s window in Olivedale, according to reports while the motive for the attack remains unknown but a murder investigation has been launched according to South African news broadcaster eNCA.

Images circulating on social media showed a bullet-riddled window on what was reported to be Mr Batchelor’s vehicle.

South Africa Police spokesman Lungelo Dlamini confirmed to media houses on the matter:

“Yes, he was shot this evening by two men on a motorbike.”He died in his vehicle and nothing was taken. The motive is yet to be established, but we are investigating.”

Meanwhile, the Police are said to have taken a statement from a man who was travelling with Marc Batchelor when he was shot multiple times outside his home on the Monday night incident.

He was part of the great Buccaneers side that won the CAF Champions League in 1995 and excelled for the Glamour Boys both as a striker and centre-back.

Batchelor was an interesting character in South African football and was a witness in the Oscar Pistorius murder trial where he testified about the former Paralympian’s outpouring temper.

The Paralympian, Pistorius had reportedly had a run-in with a friend of Batchelor’s, who the athlete had suspected of being romantically linked with Reeva Steenkamp.
