The past few days have been business unusual for the multi-billion betting firms in Kenya as the government moved in to stem the gambling menace that has negatively affected the Kenyan youth. The govt under the able hands of Interior CS Fred Matiang’i has refused to renew the licenses of major betting firms and instructed Safaricom to suspend their Paybill numbers.

Whereas some people have viewed this as a step in the right direction, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has sensationally claimed that Matiang’i is doing all this for selfish and malicious reasons.

According to Babu Owino, Matiang’i is overstepping his mandate in suspending major betting firms which employ thousands of Kenyan youths.

Taking to his Facebook page, the first time lawmaker accused Matiang’i of trying to drive out Sportpesa and Betin companies, a move he alleges, will give unfair advantage to a company called BetLion. Babu Owino argues that Matiang’i has huge interests in BetLion and is represented in the company by Lee Nyachae.

“It is his hope that through such unfair competition practices, he will drive Sportpesa and Betin out of business leaving the industry to recent entrants BetLion where he is represented by his associate Lee Nyachae.” reads part of an explosive post on Babu Owino’s Facebook Page.

We could not substantiate these claims by the time we went to press.

Babu Owino has since called the Investigative agencies led by DCI George Kinoti and DPP Noordin Haji to open investigations into the blatant abuse of power by CS Fred Matiang’i.

HERE IS WHAT BABU OWINO SAID IN DETAILS

This is only but the second time Babu Owino is attacking Matiang’i. In the first instance, the vocal MP insisted that Matiang’i is criminalizing the betting industry in the country.
