Why De Jong easily accepted Barcelona move

Frenkie de Jong was warmly welcomed at Nou Camp on Friday in a very colourful celebration. De Jong was presented as the latest Barcelona signing and pulled on Barca’s shirt for the first time on a very special occasion.

The Dutch star, who was visibly happy shared his thoughts on the exciting occasion.

“My dream has always been to be an FC Barcelona player, so the decision to come here was very easy. I’m very happy and very proud,” he told the media.

“When the president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, came to Holland expressly to see me, it showed that they believed a lot in me. They told me that I would be a very important player for the club,” explained a delighted De Jong, who also commented on the close relationship between the club and his homeland:

“Holland and Barça have always had a good connection, and Barça and Ajax have a very similar way of playing, with the philosophy of Johan Cruyff. Ajax and Barça want to play in the same way, and that’s great for me.”

The Blaugrana and Ajax reached an agreement for the transfer of midfielder Frenkie de Jong in January and was to play for Ajax till the end of season 2018-19.

The transfer of the 22-year-old cost Barca 75 million euros, plus a further 11 million in variables. The player signed a contract for the next five seasons, through to 2023/24.

The president Josep Maria Bartomeu and the CEO Ă’scar Grau were personally involved in closing the deal in Amsterdam.

The former Ajax midfielder was spotted by the Blaugrana after his sublime performance in both the Holland domestic league and UEFA Champions League.

He helped Ajax lift their domestic double; the Dutch Cup and the Eredivisie title in 17 years. He also helped the Dutch giants to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League.
