Harambee Stars defender Brian Mandela was warmly received when he landed in Egypt on Thursday after undergoing a knee surgery in France on Wednesday.
The 24-year-old picked a knee injury during Harambee Stars camp in Paris, France that eventually ruled him out of the tournament. Head coach Sebastien Migne admitted that Mandela’s absence is a huge blow for the team that returns to the continental showpiece after a 15-year wait.
After undergoing successful surgery, the heavily-built defender joined the Kenyan side at Cairo where he was received warmly with players and coaches.

The 24-year-old thanked fans, players and the Football Kenya Federation for the continued support they have accorded him during this difficult period.
“It has been hard to accept (the injury), especially because of its timing, but the support I have received from my teammates in the past few days has made it easier for me,” said Mandela.
“Football Kenya Federation has also made sure that my surgery was successful. The (Harambee Stars) Medical Team has also been supportive,”
“I may not be in a position to help the team on the pitch, but I am happy to be here to offer my support to the team, and hopefully they will do us proud,” he added.
Mandela will be part of Stars squad in Cairo where he is expected to motivate his teammates in the dressing room.
