Kenyan Premier League side, Mathare United have announced that they will conduct open trials from 24th June to 26th June at their Goan training institute in Eastleigh, Nairobi.

The Francis Kimanzi coached side finished 6th during the 2018/19 Kenyan Premier League season have now embarked on recruitment ahead of the 2019/20 campaign that will kick off towards the end of August.

A number of key players including top scorer Cliff Nyakeya, left-back David ‘Messi’ Owino and defender Johnston Omurwa have been linked with a move away from the club owing to the Slum Boys’ financial struggles. Newbies, Wazito FC are said to be interested in the trio’s services.

It now appears that the club is readying itself for an imminent exodus like the one that hit the side in 2017. The team had to turn to untested youngsters after losing all their key players to rival sides and narrowly avoided relegation from the Kenyan Premier League after struggling for the better part of the season.

Through a statement posted on its social media pages. The 2008 Kenyan Premier League champions announced open trials for all interested players that will last for three days. With coach Kimanzi away with the national team Harambee Stars, his assistant Salim Ali is expected to take charge of the recruitment exercise.

“There will be open trials at Goan Institute grounds for three days starting Monday, June 24 to Wednesday, June 26. Interested players should report at 9.30am and be in proper training kit,” read the statement from the club.

United started the 2018/10 strongly and at some point were touted as serious league challengers. A bad spell in the second leg saw them lose footing in the title chase.
