Manchester United fans fear for the worst as Rashford hobbles in first half

Manchester United family will pray and hope their forward Marcus Rashford did not get a serious injury after he was substituted by Tottenham skipper Harry Kane in the second half after what looked like he had picked up an injury.

Marcus Rashford scored England’s opening goal of their UEFA Nations League semi-final against Holland but was withdrawn at half-time pounced on an error by Matthijs de Ligt to win the Three Lions a penalty just after the half-hour mark.

He started as the centre-forward in the absence of Harry Kane and calmly slotted home from 12 yards sending Jasper Cillessen the wrong way, to continue his good form in penalties as he has never lost a penalty for the national team or even at his club debut, Manchester United.

The forward almost had a second soon after but Denzel Dumfries got back to make a superb last-ditch challenge after Jadon Sancho had played in Rashford who required treatment after going down.

He returned but was hobbling as a result, and soldiered on until the half-time interval he was later replaced by Kane at the break, after tests with physios, having struggled on until half-time like it was the case during the Premier league between United and Liverpool.

The England coach, Garry Southgate has received criticism for including struggling Kane whom fans still believe is not fit for play a mistake that was done by his club manager Mauricio Pochettino who started the skipper in the UEFA champions league finals against Liverpool who went ahead to win it and claim their sixth trophy.

England suffered more semi-final disappointment as they produced a defensive horror show to crash out of the Nations League to the impressive Netherlands in Guimaraes who will now face Portugal in the finals.

The Dutch were the far superior side but they were gifted their route to the showdown against Portugal on Sunday by suicidal defending in extra time by England, who were hoping to go one better than their World Cup semi-final exit against Croatia last summer.

England’s defending, or lack of, was the primary reason for this defeat, but this was a mediocre performance from a side hoping to lift their first trophy since the 1966 World Cup.

Southgate left out the likes of captain Harry Kane and Jordan Henderson after their Champions League final exertions when Liverpool beat Spurs in Madrid on Saturday and, of course, this tournament comes at the conclusion of a gruelling season.

There can be no excuse, however, for the errors that led England down the path to defeat and they were symptomatic of a defensive performance that bordered on the shambolic.

Ronald Koeman’s first game as coach of the Netherlands was a 1-0 loss to England in Amsterdam in March 2018 this was compelling evidence of just how far they have travelled in that time.

They were more composed and constructive than England and it was only their lack of a clinical striker that kept England in the game for so long. If Koeman can uncover one, they will be a very formidable side.
