Suspecting the child was born out of wedlock with another man, David Chelule, 40, is said to have timed the child’s mother to leave before ghastly taking away the infant’s life.

Reports indicated that Chelule drew a machete and hacked the sleeping child severally before he left him for dead.

Strangely enough, the man never took off from the scene of crime, preferring to stay and meet his wife who he suspected had betrayed him by giving birth with another man.

Chelule had only one daughter after their more than 10 years union with his wife before he was imprisoned five years ago.

Confirming the incident, Sotik Sub-county Police boss said the infant’s body had been moved to Kapkatet mortuary.

The suspect now faces fresh charges of pre-meditated manslaughter after police promised to have him charged with murder.

Incidents where prisoners are released, and immediately are arrested have become commonplace.

Last year, a Migori prisoner attempted to escape and was quickly nabbed after a 10-minute chase by prison warders.

The man who was rearrested near River Migori is said to have died in remand, with Human Rights activists suspecting he was tortured during his attempted escape.

“He was then taken to the hospital by the warders and died shortly thereafter,” Migori County Police boss, Joseph Nthenge told Daily Nation at the time.
