Uproar as New 200 shilling Note Bears Fred Matiang’i image

Who us this man Fred Matiang’i to be used as the face of the new Ksh200 Note? That is the question on everyone’s lips after noticing what has been termed as deliberate mischief and contempt for the people of Kenya who overwhelmingly voted for the new constitution.

Article 231 of the constitution categorically states that no one’s portrait will be on the face of the notes or coins. That is why we wanted the new currency.

While activists like Okiya Omtatah have moved to court challenging the use of Mzee Kenyatta’s portrait on all the new notes, we hadn’t noticed that CBK had also sneaked Matiang’i, the head boy of all Cabinet Secretaries.

Early this year, President Uhuru Kenyatta handed Matiang’i sweeping powers on the oversight of Government programmes when he appointed him the Chair of the Committee of implementation of development programmes. Some people described this as chief minister.

Could we assume that in his capacity as chief minister, Matiangi directed CBK Governor Patrick Njoroge to include his image on the new currency?

The only other reason that could explain this violation of the constitution could be that President Uhuru Kenyatta is preparing Matiang’i to succeed him in 2022 and has elevated him to the same level with his father Mzee Kenyatta, the only other Kenyan on the new currency.

Matiang’i himself is not new to violating the constitution. In March 2018, High Court Judge George Odunga fined Matiang’i Ksh200,000 for disobeying court orders in the case involving NRM General Miguna Miguna.
