British firm’s underhand dealings that brought Raila down to his knees

The past 2017 polls were not easy for ODM leader Raila Odinga. Apart from the elections being marred with irregularities, Odinga’s name was used for all bad reasons.

Several instruments, among them propaganda and fake news about him were used to attack him. Well, this was quite brutal!

Did you know that a British based firm was the one hired to do all these against Odinga?

Well, Mr Odinga’s tour to London for Chatham House conference has exposed the underhand dealings of Cambridge Analytica, which specialises in data analysis, that brought Odinga down to his knees.

Mr Odinga while addressing the conference on Monday revealed how the firm was spreading hate messages to tarnish his name during the 2017 polls.

He further exposed how propaganda and fake news and how both instruments were used to derail the last elections.

“I have been a victim of these fake news. The international community has failed to rein in them,” He told participants at Chatham House.

“Cambridge Analytica were running a platform where anytime you opened a page you would see my picture there with very negative stories. Once the campaigns were over, you could not see those pages, making it difficult to seek legal redress,” a local daily quoted him.

Mr Odinga further revealed how the firm helped hijack Kenya’s democracy. He explained how voters were fed with apocalyptic messages that painted him as the leader into darkness, who would bring violence and corruption.

According to the African Union’s high representative for infrastructure and development in Africa, Facebook, Twitter and even Google – facilitated the work of outfits such as Cambridge Analytica, and therefore were complicit in poisoning democracies.

The conference the ODM leader is attending is in honour of the legacy of former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan.
