County official nabbed ferrying bundles of 1,000 notes after CBK order

A Samburu County staff is in police custody for transporting over Sh1 million cash that he was not able to account for.

This comes amid the phasing out of the Sh1,000 notes to be replaced by newly rolled out notes.

According to the police report, the Samburu County official, who is said to be attached to the Social services department.

The amount he was nabbed with was found with an exact total of Sh1,099,000 in Sh1,000 denominations in a bag.

According to Samburu Police Commander Karanja Muiruri, police intercepted the man at a road block in Learata area along the Isiolo-Moyale highway.

“We are trying to establish the source of the money and where it was being taken to,” Mr Muiruri said.

At the same time the commander said investigators were working to piece up information on whether other county officials were involved in the transfer of the money.

The county official is being processed for possible prosecution at the Samburu Law Courts.
