Kenya’s High population pushed to slums – Report

Kenya is among the top three countries in the world having the largest of their people residing in slums.

Youth in Kenya are experiencing much higher unemployment rates than the rest of the population hence pushing them in the slums.

Over 80% of Kenya’s population is aged below 35 years as per the Kenya National Statistics Bureau, KNBS. This translates into the high levels of youth unemployment.

The latest World Bank report released on Monday shows that Kenya has 56% of its people living in slums ranking at number 3 globally while South Sudan tops with 96% of its population live in slums.

Slums in Kenya are characterized by poor infrastructure, overcrowding, few resources and poor sanitation facilities.

This means Kenya has one of the highest income inequalities in the world despite having a consistent growth in Gross in Domestic Product since 2010.

According to the World Bank latest report called Spectator Index, Egypt, Ethiopia, Nigeria and South Africa still have struggling populations who live in slums.

In Kenya’s capital, Nairobi the sprawling slums are:

  • Kibera
  • Mathare
  • Kayole
  • Dandora
  • Baba Ndogo
  • Fuata Nyayo
  • Huruma
  • Kawangware
  • Kangemi
  • Kariobangi
