EACC dismisses Governors demands of “Honourable arrest”

“We don’t have white and blue collar suspects. Criminal suspects are suspects in general.”

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission of Kenya (EACC) has come out to dismiss governors appeal of honourable arrest.

The idea of honourable arrest arose from the EACC raid on Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu alias Baba Yao.

In a day of high drama, EACC detectives raided two of Mr Waititu’s homes — one on Kiambu Road and another at Garden Estate in Runda — and ransacked them for five hours.

Search operations were also conducted in the county offices and homes of the county chief’s family members, directors of private companies, and 10 senior employees.

But the operation seems not to have gone down well with governors who are now demanding to be treated with “decorum” in case of future arrests.

Through their umbrella body, Council of Governors (CoG), the county chiefs say that whereas they do not condone graft, they do not deserve to be treated “guilty as charged even before being subjected to courts of law.”

CoG Wycliffe Oparanya demanded that Governors be treated with decorum while being arrested.

But this demands have been rubbished by EACC through their CEO Twalib Mbarak. Twalib Mbarak Stated that a criminal is a criminal no matter the title or position they hold.

“I think the law is very clear. We don’t have white and blue collar suspects. Criminal suspects are suspects in general,”stated Twalib Mbarak.

However Twalib has stated that if the law is amended to direct EACC to treat Governors with decorum, then they will abide by it.
