Why Statehouse should cancel Narok Madaraka Day Celebrations

With barely five days left for Kenya to mark Madaraka Day in a celebration set to be marked in Narok, political storm has already hit the venue, with fake gold scandal and handshake politics dominating the talks. How are the celebrations going to look like with this kind of environment?

Well, over a long period of time, President Uhuru Kenyatta has expressed his confidence in his handshake with opposition chief Raila Odinga. This according to the views of many Kenyans and political leaders, is the only thing that brought peace and unity in Kenya after the disputed 2017 presidential polls.

In this spirit, President Kenyatta awarded Narok the venue for this year’s Madaraka Day Celebrations. However, Deputy President Dr William Ruto on Saturday seems to have poisoned the venue, a move that has angered a section of Kenyans.

Blame games in the fake gold scandal took a centre stage in Narok yesterday when the DP toured the region to launch several projects. In the tanga tanga mission, the word of the day came from the book of Raila, fake gold scam being the verse!

Leaders from the region kept on castigating Raila, putting him at the centre of the gold scandal.

Following Raila’s recent remarks on the scandal where he claimed that he was the whistle blower in the scandal, a section of leaders from Narok are now demanding him to clearly state his role in the scam.

They argue that why did he open up only after his ally Moses Wetangula’s audio going viral. They are even calling for DCI to probe Raila. But what does this mean to the much anticipated celebrations?

With President Kenyatta believing in handshake, he is set to grace the event on 1st June 2019. In this spirit, he might be accompanied by his counterpart Raila to the event, where the region’s leaders are demanding his probe!

Won’t the same politics that played the centre stage on Saturday carry the day on this National day? Will it not be an embarrassment to the President and Raila as well as the handshake at large?

City Lawyer Donald Kipkorir is one of the Kenyans arguing that the proposed venue should be canceled.

He posted his argument on twitter, urging statehouse to cancel Narok.

“Many times, our President, Uhuru Kenyatta has said he believes in the Handshake with Raila Odinga …. Madaraka Day, a National Day that is led by the President is to be held in Narok .. Today, all Narok Political Leaders Met & rubbished Baba … State House should cancel Narok,” read his post.
