There is nothing Kenyans love like drinking…especially random drinking. Its a Part of our culture now.
But what happens when you had the night of your life just before the day of a very important early meeting? After waking up with a pounding head, aim to restock the body with necessary fluids and nutrients like fructose, vitamins, amino acids, and minerals that can help break down toxins or lessen the body’s negative reaction to the chemicals in booze.
1. Water
Alcohol dehydrates your body of fluids, so it is recommendable to drink lots of water because the more fluids you replace the better you will feel. While nursing with a bottle of water the next morning will certainly help your hangover. This method is best used preventatively.
2. Kutoa lock
Apparently, if you do have the worst of the worst of hangovers, having a little tipple or a cheeky breakfast cocktail. In other words, fight fire with fire. Dawa ya moto ni moto.
3. Coconut water and energy drinks
Sugary sports drinks can do more harm than good, but such is not the case with a killer hangover. Reach for a Redbull or similar beverage to restore liquids and electrolytes stat or pop open a box of coconut water, which has five of the electrolytes found in human blood, while most sports drinks only have two.
Finally, one more cure that’s garnered a cult following is Pedialyte. This drink intended for dehydrated children provides even more sodium and potassium than Redbull or Shark, and for far fewer calories.
4. Ginger or peppermint tea
For a soothing brew, look no further than your favourite herbal tea. Studies show that ginger tea may reduce nausea and motion sickness. Peppermint tea, a common morning sickness cure for pregnant ladies may also ease stomach pain and decrease nausea.
Now onto what to avoid
1. Orange juice
Lay off the OJ after a night on the town. Sour citrus like orange and grapefruit can irritate an already sensitive stomach. Also, skip tomato juice it is also acidic, making a Bloody Mary at brunch is probably the worst choice for a hungover morning.
2. Greasy foods
Contrary to popular knowledge, heading to the classic Galitos, Chicken Inn, or Pizza Inn is not a great idea. Turns out, a large, fatty meal is better at preventing a hangover rather than curing one, since fried foods can irritate the stomach. But, chowing down on a big burger before the liquor starts flowing can help insulate the stomach, preventing alcohol from being absorbed into the stomach lining and bloodstream.
