SK Macharia is one of the biggest media stakeholders in Kenya and one of the wealthiest to boot. But he wasn’t always like that.

He recently revealed that he once worked as a sweeper during a prize-giving ceremony at Kahuhia Girls High School where he opened up about his past. The event was covered by his T.V station, Citizen T.V.

S.K Macharia explained that while he was living in the US, he took up a job as a sweeper at American plane manufacturer Boeing so as to get money for his school fees, saying,

When I was in the US, I worked at night and went to school during the day. Do you know a company called Boeing that makes big planes in Seattle? I swept their floors for eight years.

His reason for giving the inspiring anecdote was to cause others to be motivated to do become whatever they want, adding,

I paid my school fees by working at night and going to school during the day, so there’s nothing that you can not achieve.
You don’t have to be assisted by anybody but if you get assistance, it’s just a small push. It’s all about what you are doing for yourself that will make you a person and you will be proud of yourself.

The Royal Media Services (RMS) founder finished off by telling the students to work hard and not to fear anything explaining that he did not excel in high school.

Njenga Karume
SK’s rousing story reminds me of that of Njenga Karume; the politician who was once a charcoal dealer before he became a billionaire. At his death in 2012, his empire was diversified into three main areas Hospitality, Real Estate and Agriculture, with the Jacaranda Group of Hotels being one of the prized possessions.
