Not very many people can stand up against William Ruto in the Mt. Kenya region. Not even President Uhuru Kenyatta, he had to rope in Raila Odinga to help tame his Deputy. Ruto is the most powerful Deputy President in Kenya’s history.

He has crushed almost all his critics, especially from Central Kenya. The Peter Munyas, Martha Karuas and Peter Kenneth do not hold any elective position at the moment.

But one man is proving to be a big headache for the Deputy President. His name is Karanja Kibicho, the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Interior.

Kibicho is arguably the most powerful PS in the government at the moment, just like his boss Fred Matiang’i is the Chief Minister. When Nairobi governor Mike Sonko complained that Kibicho was undermining him, we thought he was bluffing.

But recent events have proved that this man is a no-nonsense person. He is more powerful than the normal PS.

In April last year, the country was shocked when the Provincial Administration that includes County Commissioners all the way to chiefs went missing from Ruto’s function in Nyeri.

According to sources within the DP’s entourage, there was not a single police officer or members of the national administration at the county level in the event which was organized by the African Independent Pentecostal Church of Africa (AIPCA)

The Provincial administration and National Police are under the Ministry of Interior meaning they receive their orders from Karanja Kibicho. So did the PS order the police not to attend Ruto’s function?

Kibicho denied these allegations and blamed Ruto for the bluff that happened in Nyeri.

But it became apparent that there was something wrong between Ruto and Kibicho when police and county commissioners went missing during Ruto’s tour of Turkana County last weekend.

Ruto is believed to have been angered by the latest incident that he confronted Kibicho at JKIA on Wednesday and warned him against sabotaging his 2022 Presidential bid.

A source, who was present during the “lecture”, said the DP cautioned Kibicho not to use his office to coerce administrators on the ground to frustrate his 2022 presidential bid.

And for close to 15 minutes, a visibly angry Ruto is said to have engaged the PS wanting to know why he had allegedly instructed county commissioners and police commanders not to provide security at his functions.
