As focus shifts on this Sunday’s highly anticipated Mashemeji Derby the excitement among Gor Mahia and AFC leopards is at its peak. It’s the biggest and most watched football match on Kenyan Soil and this Sunday will be no different as both teams embark on a 90-minute mission in search for the king of the mashemeji derby.
Interestingly, this season has already produced the real king of the high action derby and it’s neither Gor Mahia nor AFC Leopards. Yes, the two teams that will face off this Sunday and have done so for years in the biggest Kenyan Derby are not the kings of that particular derby, at least for this season!
Kenya Commercial Bank Football club is the De Facto kings of the derby. Frank Ouna’s side is the only team this season that has managed to get maximum points off both AFC leopards and the league leaders Gor Mahia.
The Bankers beat Gor Mahia by a solitary goal back in January(Gor Mahia’s only loss in the league this year before falling to Nzoai last Wednesday) and beat AFC leopards in midweek by the same margin in what was Ingwe’s last match before they face off with their Arch Rias on Sunday.
So While Gor Mahia will be looking to seal another title with a win on Sunday and AFC Leopards seeking to restore their pride by beating their eternal rivals, the crown for King of the Mashemeji derby this season will not be up for grabs because KCB already took it home.
