John Avire was the name on everyone’s lips after being included in Harambee Stars’ coach Sebastien Migne Preliminary AFCON squad. The 21-year-old Sofapaka striker is one of the 5 forwards that will battle it out for the striker’s role when the competition kicks out in Egypt in slightly more than a month’s time.

Avire is one of the exciting forwards currently plying their trade in the ever-improving Kenya Premier League. He has lightened the league with his pace and triggery and his seven goals have played a role in Sofapaka’s good run this season.

Avire famously led Passenga High School to a first ever national school games title in 2014 as a Form Two, scoring the winning goal as they beat Upper Hill High School in the final. He also ended up as the tournament top scorer.

After clearing High School in 2016, he signed for Bandari who loaned him out to Kakamega Homeboyz before he was recalled. He joined Mount Kenya midway through last season before following his coach Melis Medo to Sofapaka.

He got the eyes of coach Migne in February when he was named in the first Preliminary squad to do duty against Ghana.

“I believe I can earn a place in the team. If I continue working hard and keep on adding my tally of goals, I will stand an opportunity to be there. If given the chance, I know I will do my best and prove that I deserve it and I am among the best,” the forward told a local media house in March.

And he did just that, going on to establish himself as one of Sofapaka’s key players in a squad with experienced players like Stephen Waruru, Pistone Mutamba and Umar Kasumba.

Those who know him describe his playing style as a man with lightning pace and ability to score from any range if given chance. We hope he will shine on the big stage.
