Other Surprising Ways to Cook your ‘Ngwashe’

We all know of the common ‘Ngwashe’ aka Sweet Potatoes in Kenya. They are a great alternate to many other starches, such as ugali and much sweeter anyway. But lots of people don’t really know what to do with these specific potatoes.

Let’s be honest, hand a kenyan a sweet potato and they all have the same reactions to it .

They will be boiled to death …mostly and that’s really it. That’s great but there is so much more we can do with sweet potatoes. Here are some interesting ways to have sweet potatoes.

1, Fry them

Say goodbye to those sonford chips guys! Sweet potatoes are the new kid on the block. They taste so good with some salsa and guacamole

Protip: Make sure to fry them, drain them and then fry them again and toss them with some chilli flakes and sea salt. Yum yum!

2. Mash them

Why must the ordinary potato get the spotlight? Listen, mashed sweat potatoes are the real plug! You can have them with some honey glazed sausages and home made tomato sauce.

Protip: Add some butter to the potato mash to make them taste even creamier.

3. Roast them

If it was good enough for our moms and dads when they were kids in the village, then they are good for us. Roasted sweet potatoes are low on calories and great with some spiced tea.

Protip: Make sure to roast the potatoes with the skin on to help the inside of the potato caramelize and taste even sweeter.

4. Bake them

Nothing says comfort food like baked potatoes. Baked potatoes are low in sugar and calories and taste so good in a salad.

Protip: Add in some bacon, shredded carrots, some onions, some lettuce and a vinaigrette for a really delicious salad.

5. Make chips

Not those chips hun. We mean potato chips. Basic potato chips are played out. Don’t argue with us sis. Issa truth!

Protip: These chips are great with a dip. A great dip is tahini sauce or sim sim sauce. Grind up some sim sim 2 garlic cloves, half a spoon of sea salt, 1/3 cup fresh lemon juice some water, 1/4 cup olive oil and enjoy!
