This is how kissing spreads gonorrhoea

Kissing with tongues have been proven to spread the sexually transmitted infection gonorrhoea according to Australian researchers.

The scientists found gay men were more likely to have gonorrhoea in their throat than their penis – and the risk of spreading it was greater for kissing than for oral sex.

Several case reports in the 1970s suggested kissing as a mode of transmission for throat or oropharyngeal gonorrhoea.

The new findings suggest kissing with or without sex may be a risk factor for oropharyngeal gonorrhoea.

In contrast, the NHS website says gonorrhoea is easily passed between people through unprotected sex and sharing sex toys.

It warns the bacteria are mainly found in discharge from the penis and in vaginal fluid and adds: “Gonorrhoea is not spread by kissing.”

It also says the infection cannot be spread through hugging, swimming pools, toilet seats, or sharing baths, towels, cups, plates or cutlery.
