Kalenjin Elders Call for Govt’s Support Amid Claims DP Ruto has Abandoned Them

A section of Kalenjin elders wants the government to support them in their efforts to participate in activities that will stabilize the community overcome social and cultural challenges. 

Few weeks ago Uasin Gishu Women Representative Gladys Sholei had brought on Ruto William to account for his service to his backyard over the six years he has been to the Deputy President position.

According to Sholei, in his own county of Uasin Gishu,there are no tangible government projects like new roads or new infrastructure,courtesy of Ruto’s lobbying the residents can boast of.

Former Chairman for the Kalenjin Council of Elders Retired Major John Seii says elders need political good will to provide guidance in communities to end the worrying trend of domestic violence that is being witnessed across the country.

Speaking in Cherangany during a peace meeting for different communities in the region, Deputy President’s legal adviser Dr. Abraham Sing’oei says there is need to empower elders to assist in solving some of the social challenges affecting communities in the country.

Sing’oei said society is currently fragmented as it faces challenges of teenage pregnancies, drug abuse and the current spate of domestic violence.His sentiments were echoed by Former Chairman for the Kalenjin Council of Elders Major Retired John Seii.

Seii who is also a member of the task-force for the building bridges initiative said, they have already received views from residents of 33 counties who have expressed the need for peace, unity and equal opportunities.

Elsewhere, leaders in Tiaty constituency in Baringo County have accused police officers of killing 62 heads of cattle in Kerio valley along Elgeyo Marakwet – Baringo border.

Condemning the attack, the leaders led by Baringo County Assembly Deputy Speaker Ameja Selamoi said it was a provocation that could disrupt the peace that has prevailed in the recent past.

They demanded compensation for the animals which were killed and injured saying the livestock is the only source of livelihood for locals.
