Why Liverpool and Man City may have to play 39TH match this season due to a Premier League rule.

Liverpool and City have been locked in an enthralling battle all season at the top of the table.

Both sides have shared the lead for extended periods of time – with either looking favorites to triumph at one stage or another.

And with only two matches left this season, just one point separates the two teams.

So what would have to happen in the unlikely event of being unable to decide a winner? If a team finishes level on points at the end of the season, they are of course separated by goal difference.

Should teams share the same goal difference, goals scored will then be used as a decider.

Most league competitions would then enforce the head-to-head rule with this total level.

However, the Premier League do not. This means that in the extremely unlikely event that Liverpool and City share the same goal difference and goals scored tally, a playoff would have to take place.

This would be a first in Premier League history, though it has been a possibility going into the final match of the season in previous years.

Two years ago, Liverpool, City, and Arsenal were faced with the prospect of a playoff to decide the final Champions League qualifying spot with the teams third to fifth all neck-and-neck.

The Premier League also booked two dates at Wembley with Manchester United and Newcastle fighting it out for the title back in the 1995/96 season, before the Red Devils ran out clear winners by four points.

So where and when would a potential play-off take place?

With the City playing in the FA Cup final on the 18th May, it is expected that this blockbuster showdown would happen during the week prior.

The play-off would also likely be at Wembley, with the match taking place at a “neutral venue”, though Old Trafford would make geographical sense.

To happen though, Liverpool need to overturn a four-goal goal difference deficit, also winning both their matches and requiring City to drop points.
