Arsenal show resolve and mental strength to ease past Valencia

Coming into their Europa League Semifinal first leg tie with Valencia at the Emirates, Arsenal’s confidence was at it’s lowest. The Gunners had lost 3 on the bounce in the Premier League leaving their top 4 hopes clinging by a thread in the process.

Just 11 minutes in, Valencia were ahead after a mix up in the Arsenal defense allowed Mouctar Diakhaby to head the visitors in front. The doubts among the players and mostly the fans crept in, Could it be another loss? Can Arsenal mount a comeback? Will it be enough? All questions lingering in the Fans minds at that particular moment.

The first answer came just 7 minutes after going behind when Lacazette took the ball in his own half, broke forward an fed the ball to his strike partner Aubamenyang who laid a good pass for him to slot the ball into an empty net. The Frenchman was at it against just before half time to turn Granit Xhaka’s cross into a second goal for him and the Arsenal.

Unai Emery’s men got their third in the last minute of normal time to ensure that they take a healthy lead into for the second leg next Thursday. The win, however, will go down as the most important in Unai Emery’s tenure at Arsenal. His team showed the resolve and mental strength needed by a top team especially having lost 3 in a row.
