Leaving in Nairobi can be tasky you look at your salary and wonder how yo will make it through just one month but, like I always say, there is always a way out.
If you earn Ksh10,000, here’s how you can survive the scorching sun of Nairobi.
1.Get room mates
You can get a single room or a bedsitter worth ksh10,000 and get three friends to live with and cost share the rent. Each of you will contribute 3,300 for rent and about 150 for electricity.
There are places you can get a one bedroom at that cost so make sure you get the best bargain at a good place.
2. Transport
Transport is really expensive in Nairobi, try and get a house a place closer to your work. Of course you have to put your room mates in consideration. You can put aside 3,000 for transport.
Take every opportunity to save money, walk where you can, if boda boda is cheaper take the pleasure. Taking a cab can be a little costly so it would be wise to use other means unless you have two or three people you can cost share a cab ride.
3. Personal Care
This is anything to do with grooming. For ladies we are talking about pads, moisturizers, your hair. Men don’t need much just a barber. Let’s approximate this to a total of 1500 for a woman and a bit less for men.
For ladies, buy your own shampoo, conditioner, treatment and use them at home. It will reduce your budget.
4. Airtime
You should only buy airtime when you need it. Budget for Ksh500 a month for airtime and take advantage of free WiFi zones.
5. Food
Food is expensive if you will keep eating out, however, you can stock up cereals and maize flour and wheat flour in your house. If your not into bioling you can get cheaper options from local vegetable vendors who sell boiled githeris, beans, ndengu and black beans(njahii).
You can leave about 1500, for food. Remember you can always carry packed lunch to work. It is always cheaper to cost share, you can talk to you room mates and make arrangements to share the budget.
