Countries that honour Labour Day differently and other Facts about it

Kenya joins the rest of the world in commemorating Labour Day Holiday on 1st May 2019 in the spirit to celebrate workers achievements.

The day is regarded as a public holiday in many countries worldwide.

It usually occurs around May 1, but the date varies across countries.

On this day, it is a day off for the general population, and schools and most businesses are closed.

In Kenya today, Labour Day celebrations have been politicized so much just like other social events like funerals and weddings.

Even though it is a day to address the plight of employees in the country as well as celebrate their achievements, politicians use it is a platform to discuss political issues instead.

Here are some interesting facts about this great Day:

In the United Kingdom, May Day is celebrated with the crowning of the Queen with flowers.

In Mexico, it is a national holiday honoring workers. Some groups organize parades or protests to promote and protect workers’ rights.

In the US, Australia, and Canada the Labor Day holiday, is celebrated at different times of the year.

In China, Labor Day was a 3 days holiday during the 1990s. However, in 2008, The Chinese government reduced this holiday period down to one day.

In Spain, a tall pine tree is used as a Maypole. It is decorated with ribbons, beads, and eggshells as people dance around the pole and sing May songs.
