Bank robbers hit equity bank and steal jackpot size amount

Nearly a week after robbers hit Barclays Bank ATMs in Nairobi and made away with Ksh14m, another gang has robbed equity branch — this time, a Compass Bank just five miles away outside the capital.

The robbers are alleged to have stolen Sh1.6m from Equity Bank, Karatina branch in Nyeri.

Police say the thieves accessed the bank through the front door at around 7 pm. This, however, is not the first time equity has been hit.

In the recent past, three men who had posed as auditors stole Sh30 million from Equity bank, Othaya branch, in a robbery.

The smartly dressed trio posed as auditors from Equity bank head office in Nairobi sent to inspect the books at the branch. They even flashed fake identification cards at the branch’s managers to prove that they were genuine Equity bank employees.

In a seperate incidence in 2018 A dramatic scene was witnessed inside Equity bank in Kisumu after suspected robbers attempted to raid the bank.

One suspect who was in possession of a toy pistol was shot dead while his five counterparts were arrested.

Shortly before police arrived at the scene, the suspects had reportedly held the bank manager at ‘gun’ point, ordering him to open the safe and stash all the money in the sack.
