Atwoli slams workers federation over housing levy

The Central Organisation of Trade Union (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has slammed the Federation of Kenya Employee for rejecting the government proposal of the 1.5 per cent housing levy.

According to Atwoli the housing levy implemented by the government is or a noble course and people should take it positively.

While addressing the shop stewards meeting at COTU headquarters he said that the levy will benefit the workers as government is meant to increase the workers wage by 15 percent.

His remarks came after the FKF obtained an order suspending the implementation of the levy.

Not only is the FKF opposing but Kenyans took offence with Article 25 of the Act which states that anyone who misappropriates the housing fund will be liable to imprisonment for two years or be made to pay a fine not exceeding Sh10,000 or both.

Once implemented the levy will see a 1.5 per cent mandatory levy on a worker’s gross salary, with a monthly maximum deduction of Sh2,500 for individuals earning a basic salary of Sh166,000 and above.
