10 arrested for murder of Lamu youth leader

Police have arrested 10 suspects said to be connected with the murder of a Lamu youth leader, Amina Bakari.

Ms Bakari was on Monday attacked by a gang while closing her shop at 10 p.m. The attackers according to police reports stabbed her twice in the stomach.

The mysterious murder was speculated to be a vengeful attack as the attackers did not rob Bakari of anything. They are suspected to have murdered her under claims that she was a police informer.

30-year-old Ms Bakari wasa Nyumba Kumi leader, who also volunteered with the Kenya Red Cross Society.

“The matter is under intensive investigation. Police have also launched a massive operation [to look] for those involved in the killing. Several suspects have already been arrested and are in police custody. They are being interrogated by our officers. We expect more arrests in the course of the day,” said Lamu County Commissioner Joseph Kanyiri.

In response to concerns about increased insecurity in the county, Mr Kanyiri cited rogue behavior by youth, to which he said they will be acting upon.

“I have observed that many young people here love to walk around with pangas and knives for no reason. We can’t allow that and that means if we find you we will have you arrested and charged. People should adhere to the existing ban on crude weapons in public places,” said Mr Kanyiri.
