Firebrand Uganda politician Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine has been summoned by detectives to appear before Katwe Police Station.

The politician is accused of incitement of violence and holding an unlawful assembly.

The summons dated Thursday April 2, 2019 refer to an April 22 incident in which Bobi Wine allegedly incited violence in defiance to guidelines by the Inspector General of Police.

The letter signed by the Director Criminal Investigations Joseph Obwona says Bobi Wine defied the IGP and held an unlawful assembly during the preparation of Kyarenga extra concert at One Love Beach in Busabala.

He is expected to appear tomorrow, Friday April 26th at 1:00 hours.

Bobi Wine has been under house arrest at his home in Magere, Kasangati Wakiso district since April 23.

He escaped from police today to attend the burial of his friend in Bugiri district.

The Deputy Speaker, Jacob Oulanyah, earlier urged the state to arraign Bobi Wine in court instead of detaining him in his home if he has committed crimes.

The Deputy Speaker’s guidance followed a statement by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon. Mario Obiga Kania, on the continued arrest of Hon. Kyagulanyi, who is also a renowned musician.

Minister Obiga Kania said that Kyagulanyi is being detained for committing some crimes and was expected to make statements to the police.

“We shall take the appropriate action to make sure that we are acting within the parameters of the law to detain Kyagulanyi,” he said.

Legislators demanded that government explains the continued confinement of the MP and why the Police prevented him and other opposition members from holding their scheduled events even after complying with the Public Order Management Act.

Members also sought explanations from government about the circumstances under which their colleague is being detained at his home in Magere, Wakiso district.

The Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Betty Aol Ocan, said that not allowing Kyagulanyi to leave his home is similar to putting him in incarceration.

Ocan further warned the government saying that the oppressive act of holding Kyagulanyi in detention and other people that have been detained in the past will have repercussions in the long term as it’s likely to lead to anarchy.
