Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has claimed that Miguna Miguna was his first choice for the position of the deputy governor.

Sonko was before the Senate committee on devolution to explain why he hasn’t appointed the deputy governor since the exit of Igathe from the seat.

Sonko claimed that the County assembly rejected his nominee and he was left powerless.

Senator John Nderitu to Sonko: This is not a non-issue; it is a very serious issue bearing in mind the drafters of the constitution were very clear The purpose of a deputy governor is to deputise you…if something was to happen to you… and God forbid, what happens?

Senator John Nderitu wondered what would happen if something happened to governor Sonko.

“Don’t say its a non-issue, what would happen in case of death? you know the purpose of the deputy governor is to deputize you?” he said.

Sonko, however, notes that he has shown goodwill and has even appointed Miguna Miguna as his deputy but the same was rejected by the MCAs.

Wiper and NASA had written to governor Sonko requesting him to appoint the deputy governor.

Earlier Sonko had said that whereas he has a preferred candidate, the Nasa political coalition had complicated the matter with a request that one of its own be considered. The governor is still making consultations.

“This is, therefore, to inform you that I shall not be forwarding the deputy governor nominee that I had chosen. I will nominate a suitable deputy governor after consultation,” he said.

The governor promised Senate that he would consult widely to nominate his deputy governor.

He had accused Senator Johnson Sakaja of petitioning the Senate instead of engaging him to address the matter.

“I still consulting because this is an emotive issue. Furthermore, there is no law that allows me to appoint a deputy,” he said.

Sonko says the Supreme Advisory issued in March last year giving governors 14 days to appoint a deputy in case of a vacancy, was not binding and therefore he has not violated any law by not appointing a deputy.
