In the recent past, Barclays banks in Kenya have come over sharp critisism over fake money scandals! The bank is hitting the headlines yet again for the wrong reasons. On Saturday night, Barclays Bank systems in Nairobi were hacked and thugs withdrew money from different ATMs.
On Sunday morning the police confirmed the gang made away with Sh7m from two ATMs belonging to Barclays Bank in Buruburu and South B.
These are the statements and OB Numbers recorded at three different police stations;
Nairobi county, Kamukunji sub county, Buruburu police. Subject: ATM machine breaking and stealing. Today at about 2pm, Mr George Ogiro telephone no 0720695959 a crew Commander of G4s reported that on 18/4/2019 loaded Mutindwa ATM machine within mutindwa road with ksh 7million, and today on 20/4/2019 they received information from Barclay’s bank that the ATM was not operational.They opened the machine and found ksh 6,290,000 missing. SUBJECT : INCIDENT REPORT. IT WAS REPORTED BY ONE WILSON MZEDI A STAFF OF G4S OF TEL. 0720563388 THAT THEY GOT A REPORT FROM THE KENYATTA NATIONAL HOSPITAL BARCLAYS BANK ATM SYSTEM THAT IT WAS NOT WORKING.MAINTAINANCE PERSONELL NAMELY HENRY MALEYA OF TEL 0722937674 WAS SENT TO CHECK ON THE MACHINE AND ON ARRIVAL AND CLOSE CHECKING HE ESTABLISHED THAT THE ATM HAD BEEN TAMPERED ELECTRONICALLY AND APPROXIMATELY 4.315 MILLION SHILINGS STOLLEN. SCENE WAS VISITED BY THE D/SUB-COUNTY COMMANDER KILIMANI,DIV CRIME PERSONELL AND DUTY OFFICER CAPITAL HILL THE SCENE WAS PROCESSED BY CSSS AND NECESSARY ACTION TAKEN. IT WAS REPORTED BY ONE NICKSON OLUOCH OF TEL. 0723841251 AND THE IN CHARGE OF G4S THAT THEY WERE SENT BY THEIR LOGISTICS MANAGER TO SERVICE AN ATM OF BARCLAYS BANK AT MATER HOSPITAL BUT ON ARRIVAL AT AROUND 0900 HRS THEY DISCOVERED THAT THE SAID ATM HAD BEEN TAMPERED WITH AND A SUM OF KSHS ONE (1) MILLION WITHDRAWN ERRONEOUSLY BY UNKNOWN PEOPLE AT 0730HRS. THE CCTV CAMERA AT THE SAME POINT WAS FOUND SMEARED WITH PETROLEUM JELLY TO OBSTRUCT VIEW. SCENE VISITED AND PROCESSED BY CSI MAKADARA, CASE PUI.
Barclays Bank is yet to respond 12 hours later after the incident.
