DCI raid Kiambu Children’s Home and rescue 74 illegally kept children

At least 74 children were rescued following a raid by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations at a Kiambu children’s home on Friday. During the raid, the DCI officials arrested Pauline Wambui, a director at the Young Dream’s Children Home.

Wambui was arrested by detectives acting after a tip off from the Children’s Department officials. Detectives have started investigating reports that the children lived in squalid conditions at the home under the watch of the director. Local children’s department officers had written to the DCI concerning the conditions at the home.

Police are also investigating whether due process was followed in transferring the children from their previous home to the Kiambu one, which reports indicate is not registered.

This is as last month, the government closed down a children’s home owned by the Catholic Church in Machakos County over alleged cases of sodomy. County’s children department together with other relevant government agencies stormed Martyrs of Uganda Children’s Home in Machakos sub-county after obtaining court orders to do so.The county director of children services Salome Muthama said they rescued 36 children from the institution after eight of them were allegedly sodomised by a cook.
