A Prime Minister has resigned and dissolved government after massive protests hit the African country.

In the protests that led to the massacre of around 160 citizens, Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita noted that he had received and accepted the resignation of the country’s Prime Minister, Soumeylou Boubeye Maiga.

After a string of violence hit the country’s Mopti region, protesters took to the streets to decry the lacklustre manner in which the Prime Minister was handling the situation.

Wednesday, members of Parliament tabled a vote of no confidence against the Prime Minister, citing his inability to steer Mopti out of violence.

“A prime minister will be named very soon and a new government will be put in place after consultations with all political forces” from both the ruling and opposition sides,” read a statement from the Office of the President.

Mali has been largely under tension since the invasion of Al-Qaeda-linked terror group in 2012.

While the French army brought significant order to some of the initially war-torn regions, some areas are still riddled with killings and lawlessness.
