Why Llorente’s Controversial Goal Will Not Be Allowed in The Coming Seasons

Fernando Llorente was the game-changer and his controversial goal made Tottenham advance to the semi-finals of the Champions League.

The Spaniard came on as a first-half substitute and bundled in what turned out to be the winner in the 73rd minute.

The goal was the subject of a lengthy VAR check to determine whether or not Llorente had carried out a deliberate handball as the ball appeared to clip his arm before striking his hip and finding the back of the net.

The referee eventually decided to award the goal before VAR later disallowed a dramatic Raheem Sterling winner in injury time for offside in the build-up.

It was Llorente who delivered the decisive moment for Spurs on a memorable night – but his goal would be automatically disallowed if it happened next season.

A rule change agreed by IFAB is set to be introduced across football from the start of next season which would see any goal scored involving contact with the hand or arm ruled out.

At the moment, it needs to be deliberate handball in order to be an offense, rather than simply inadvertently making contact with the arm or hand as appeared to be the case with Llorente.

David Elleray, IFAB technical director, has previously explained the rule change, stating: “Deliberate handball remains an offense.

“In the past, we’ve managed to improve the laws by focusing on the outcome rather than intent.

“What we are looking at particularly in attacking situations is where the player gets a clear unfair advantage by gaining possession or control of the ball, as a result of it making contact with their hand or arm.”

Spurs fans will have few complaints, however, as they now prepare for a mouth-watering semi-final clash with Ajax following their dramatic Manchester City success.
