Uproar as Price of Unga shoots to 120

President Uhuru Kenyatta might have issued a stern warning to maize millers not hike prices of maize flour but the situation is totally different in the market.

But a spot check in Nairobi shows that the prices have shot in the past one week. Unga is retailing between sh. 110 to sh120 in the city.

On Social media, Nakuru residents say that they are buying the staple meal at around sh120.

Maize flour has been retailing at around sh.85 for close to six months since last year when the government reduced the price of maize to sh.2600 per 90kg bag.

President Kenyatta has said that stern action will be taken against any miller who raises the price of unga or attempts to hoard maize.

But Kenyans are very pessimistic about this directive since most of the govt directives are never implemented.

The recent drought being witnessed across northern counties and some parts of the coast have worsened the situation and it is believed that the prices of food will skyrocket further.

Were maize millers invited to this meeting or the president is trying to allude that the actual cartels (maize millers ) are his cabinet secretaries ?? If not so, then walk into the NCPB offices and stop tweeting.— martin maina (@marteen_m) April 18, 2019

Already the price of milk has increased to sh55 per half-litre packet
