United declined to comment, however, the news comes on a terrible day for the famed Class of ’92 – after fellow member Paul Scholes was charged by the Football Association with allegedly breaking their rules on betting. Butt, who made 387 appearances for the club between 1992 and 2004, was appointed the head of the academy in 2016 and has been credited with the emergence of the likes of Marcus Rashford and overseeing the club’s hugely important youth operation.

He is viewed as a highly-regarded former professional who, in his coveted role, is charged with setting an example for and providing coaching and inspiration to the next generation of United heroes. It is understood that Old Trafford officials, who were focussing on a hugely important night for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his men in Catalonia, were left suddenly trying to establish details of what had taken place.
