One time or another everyone has used a public toilet probably the street public toilet(Yani za kanjo), in a restaurant, bus stations, market and/or even at your workplace.
As you go there are some things you need to consider;
1.Flushing
If the toilet you are using is a WC you need to flush the toilet with toilet seat and cover down. This is to stop the spread of germs incase the water spills out of the bowl. Also don’t touch the cover, seat and the flushing handle with your bare hands, please use tissue I don’t need to tell you about the germs surrounding the area.
Always flush toilet before and after use.
2. Using the toilet seat
If you really have to use the toilet seat, ensure you wipe it really well with tissue and then if toilet seat covers are not provided spread tissue paper all over the seat, don’t just seat on it.
Another thing you should consider is(especially for the ladies), before peeing put some tissue in the WC to prevent splash back. The amount of disease you can get from a microscopic splash can bring down your reproductive system.
3. Protect you attire
If you are visiting the street public toilet and you are in trousers, fold the bottom of your trousers to prevent it from touching the floor of the toilet. You do not want to go around smelling like you’ve peed on yourself because you are not sure if it’s water or pee, or a mixture of both.
4. Farting…..(hehehe)
There is no harm in farting in the toilet, I mean where else should you fart if not the toilet. However it is not music to the ears, so you can turn down the volume by holding your tissue by your butt(I mean right there). It’s just etiquette.
5. Door etiquette
If you don’t know this by now you should be schooled all over again; knock the door before you enter the toilet.
6. Tissue
This is especially for the street toilets; if you can, please use your own tissue.
