I used to advise police as they harassed my mum for selling chang’aa- Babu

Embakasi East MP Hon Babu Owino has treated his fans to a rare spectacle after he rekindled past memories of his upbringing.

On Wednesday, the vocal ODM politician took to his social media and posted an old photo of him and two cops.

In the photo, the young Babu is seen sitting on a stone and the cops sit on white plastic chairs keenly ‘interrogating’ him.

“When I used to advise the police about the future as they harassed my mum who was selling chang’aa,” he captioned.

Owino had revealed that the illicit brew was a source of finance that funded his education and his family’s upkeep.

“I grew up in Nyalenda slums in Kisumu county. My mother used to brew and sell chang’aa. Times were hard and the police would often go into people’s homes and beat them up. I saw my mother being whipped and I slept at Kisumu central police station several times because of selling the illicit brew,” said the ODM MP.

“We struggled to do much but that was the only means that I could see to raise fees for my education. That was until I won a scholarship that gave me a chance to do my A levels and proceed to university. I still drink chang’aa up to now because that is where I came from. It was not a bed of roses,” he added.

The politician also has never shied from saying how they used to be arrested on end because of his mother’s business.
