Kenya still has a long way to go to achieve the constitutional requirement of the two third Gender Rule. For example, we have only three female governors out of the 47.
President Uhuru Kenyatta, during a visit to Machakos, challenged Charity Ngilu to run for the presidency in 2022. He urged the women to vote for one of their own.
In Mombasa County, the iron lady politician, Mish Mboko has emerged as the favourite to succeed Governor Hassan Joho in 2022.
Mishi, an outspoken legislator representing the majestic people of Likoni Constituency was endorsed by Rachel Shebesh on Sunday.
Joho and Mboko are very tight and both vocal members of The ODM Party, whose popularity has been questioned after suffering defeats in Ugenya and Embakasi South by-elections.
The governor has already stated his interest to run for presidency in 2022 but he says his county will play a big role in the coming elections.
“This time we will be at the centre of the decision-making process. We’ll be counted as Mombasa,” the county chief said on Sunday.
Shebesh said she is determined to wipe out the perception that women are their own enemies. “They say women are their own enemies. This is just a lie spread to make women fight each other.”
She said she will ensure women support fellow women.
Mboko said her office will continue working with all leaders in supporting women’s groups towards improving the country. She is keen to forge a strong partnership with popular women in Mombasa’s political circles. The lawmaker is making plans to take men head-on.
“The strategy meetings are becoming more regular. We want to bring women together first because women have more votes than men,”
“In one of the meetings, this was discussed at length and some names have been floated.”
