How Siaya plans to boost economy through Chang’aa

Tired of consuming foreign liquor from neighbouring Uganda.

The County Government of Siaya has divulged their plans to legalize the production, sale, and consumption of Chang’aa.

Speaking on the unique proposal, County Executive Committee (CEC) member for Enterprise and Industrial development Jaoko Oburu stated that through the department of trade, the county had identified a liquor directorate.

He noted that the directorate is already looking at the required standards before they can finalize the legalization of the drink.

Oburu mentioned that the county intends to establish ways through which the chang’aa can be produced in a standardized manner and properly packaged.

He emphasized that if the drink is legalized, the process of production will create employment in Siaya County.

“There is no need of keeping the ban on traditional liquor as long as there is a way through which it can be made in a standardized manner,” Oburu noted.

Making reference to Uganda and Tanzania, Oburu stated that Siaya legalizing the brew would not be new as long as it is produced according to the optimum standards.

He further asserted that the process would help promote the country’s economic growth.

The youth’s health has deteriorated and some died because of foreign Simba Waragi illicit liquor common in the area.
