Historic successful civilian coups held in Sudan

Sudan has stormed the internet with the latest political news in the country that they have successfully been able to pressure their long-serving controversial leader Omar Al-Bashir to step down.

Well here is a brief history of their national protests against evil power that they have managed to triumph through their tremendous courage.

1964: The October Revolution;president Ibrahim Abboud

By October of 1964, an issue called the “Southern Problem” had formed in Sudan. This Southern Problem was essentially a dispute between the Arabized Muslim North and Christian South of Sudan.

On 21 October, the University Students’ Union held a meeting to discuss the Southern Problem

On 22 October, a mass demonstration took form in a funeral for Ahmad al-Qurashi. Over 30,000 marchers were present, led by university faculty, chanting anti-government slogans. The Sudanese university staff also tendered their resignations, which they would only reverse if the military regime ended and a constitutional government was established that would protect the university’s independence.

The general strike was so effective that the government machinery, general communications, and shops were shut down.

On 30 October, the campaign and strikes ended with the establishment of the transitional government. Abbud still remained the head of state but resigned due to pressure on 15 November. 

OMAR AL-BASHIR step down

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir is under house arrest in the wake of Thursday morning’s military coup, which has forced him to step down after 30 years in power marked by a brutal and dictatorial leadership, according to reports.

Earlier, government sources confirmed Bashir had stepped down in the wake of country-wide anti-government protests that have engulfed the country since last December. The military has taken over national TV and radio and arrested a number of former and current top leaders. Khartoum Airport has been closed.
