Kenyan student sentenced for life in India over rape

A Kenyan student studying in India has been given a life sentence after the court found him guilty.

The MBA student appeared in Indian local court in April.

Eric Mulinge Nethuli was found guilty of raping his fellow Kenyan in Mahila in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

The 26-years-old student is going to serve as an example as Indian authorities try to send a signal to sex offenders in the country.

The court heard that Nethuli had been invited for dinner by the victim aged 22 after which he took advantage and raped her.

Indian Newspaper The Hindu reported that the Kenyan man had been pursuing an MBA at a private college in the country.

After the incident, the victim is said to have reported the case to Ammapettai All Women Police Station.

The Hindu reports that the court sentenced him to six-and-a-half years of imprisonment under sections 342,352, 506 part 1, and Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Women Harassment Act and life imprisonment under Section 376.

The sentences are to be served concurrently. He was fined Sh25,323.
