As the number of accidents caused by reckless driving in Kenya keeps soaring, a section of Kenyans have decided to take matters in their own hands and punish rogue drivers.

Just recently, a video emerged on Social Media showing agitated passengers chasing down and beating up matatu operators for alleged reckless driving.

The matatu, belonging to Lina Sacco (registration: KCL 740B), was reportedly headed to Nairobi from Limuru when the incident occurred.

The passengers are said to have been angered by the driver and his colleague’s behavior on the road and obvious disregard for their lives.

One of the passengers, in the slightly over one-minute undated video, at one point even poses: “Tumemkataza kukimbia, anataka kutuua kwa nini?”

(Loosely translated to: “We have tried to dissuade him (driver) from speeding, why does he want to kill us?)

During the commotion, one passenger attempts to intervene on behalf of the driver.

It later emerges that the woman is driver’s sister. This is after the passenger claimed that she was the one ‘confusing’ the driver.

“He’s my brother I can’t confuse him like that,” the woman is heard saying.

But the other passengers seem enraged by the diver’s reckless driving.

“We’ve kept asking him to stop speeding. Does he want to kill us?” one of the passenger is heard saying.

The incident caused traffic snarl-up along the busy Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

The video ends with the matatu tout refunding the passengers their fare.

The video has caused excitement online with many Kenyans on Twitter commending the passengers for their stern action against the rogue duo:

I am so happy to watch this…Most of the time I always zusha alone in matatus and nobody backs me up. Sometimes I just decide to alight and let the rest who are comfortable continue with the journey.— Aaleyah Lacazette (@Amondilicious) April 7, 2019
